Robert Wallace Van Houten, class of 1930, was the President of the Newark College of Engineering (precursor to the New Jersey Institute of Technology) from 1947 to 1971.
Around the time of his retirement, the university named the then-new (dedicated in December 1967) Humanities-Library Center after Dr. Van Houten.
In August 1992, the Van Houten Library moved across campus to a modern facility -- occupying four floors in a newly-constructed building shared with the Admissions Office and the School of Industrial Management.
The statements that follow below were taken, with some annotations, from a plaque mounted in the original Van Houten library about the time it was dedicated to Dr. Van Houten. The plaque now hangs in the front entrance to the new Van Houten Library.
Robert Wallace Van Houten was born in Newark in 1905 and educated in Newark schools. In 1924 he graduated from the New Jersey Normal School of that city, and for the next two years taught in the public schools of Essex Fells and Roseland where he found his love for teaching. From 1926 to 1930, while a student at the Newark College of Engineering (precursor to the New Jersey Institute of Technology), he gained valuable engineering experience during the summers in the engineer's office at Irvington, New Jersey, and later with A. C. Widsor Construction Co., H. R. Goeller, Inc., and Wallace and Tiernan Company in Belleville. At the time of his graduation in 1930 with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, he received the highest academic honors in his course and the highest general faculty honor.
Allan R. Cullimore, the President of Newark College of Engineering, saw in young Mr. Van Houten something which led him to offer the senior an instructorship in mathematics "with small pay and no promises." Dr.Van Houten, then served successively at Newark College of Engineering as an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, assistant to the president, assistant dean, dean, acting president, president, and president emeritus after retiring in 1970.
In 1955 he was honored by Stevens Institute of Technology (in Hoboken, New Jersey) with the degree of Doctor of Engineering and by Rider College (in Lawrenceville, New Jersey) with the degree of Doctor of Science. In 1956 he was again the recipient of the Doctor of Science degree at Clarkson College of Technology (precursor to Clarkson University), in Potsdam, NewYork. In 1961 the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred on him by Newark State College (precursor to Kean College in Union, New Jersey.) Seton Hall University conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws on him in 1966 and Newark College of Engineering conferred the Doctor of Engineering degree on him in 1970.
Dr. Van Houten was elected President of the American Society for Engineering Education in 1961. Upon assuming the presidency of the ASEE, the Journal of Engineering Education wrote this about him: "the key to the mark of professionalism . . . lies in the word service, to one's company first, but additionally to the larger world which gave the engineer his education and which needs his talents so desperately. Service, Dr. Van Houten insists, is the mark of the true professional engineer and his personal sense of service is the chief quality he brings to ASEE."
He was a member of the American Council on Education, of which he was a past vice-chairman; the Association of Urban Universities, of which he was a past president; the New Jersey Association of Colleges and Universities, of which he was also a past president; the New Jersey Education Association; the Boy Scouts of America; the New Jersey State Commission on Civil Rights, of which he was chairman for five years; the boards of directors of the Essex - West Hudson Division of Junior Achievement; the Newark Rotary Club, of which again he was a past president; the board of trustees of United Hospitals of Newark; and the board of managers of the Howard Savings Institution. He was a director of J. Wiss & Sons, Inc., of Newark, New Jersey, and the Prudential Gibraltar Fund of Phoenix, Arizona. He was also a member of the New Jersey Advisory Committee of the Liberty Mutual Insurance of Boston, Massachusetts. From 1965 to 1972 he was a director of the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company.
Dr. Van Houten was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers with January 1, 1973, marking his designation as a life member. As a member of the Essex County Chapter of the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers, he served on the state scholarship committee for five years, and as a trustee of the county chapter for three years. In 1958 he was selected by the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers as the citizen of the year. In 1971 Newark College of Engineering awarded him the Allan R. Cullimore Medal for his significant contributions to the profession of engineering, engineering education, and Newark College of Engineering.
The tradition of which he inherited, or perhaps it is better to say grew up in, is a tradition which insists that engineering is a profession which places heavy responsibility on the individual in terms of high ethical standards and selfless devotion to the community.
The engineer, Dr. Van Houten believed, because of his special training and special aptitudes in logic and analytical thinking, is uniquely well-fitted to render exceptional service in government and in civic affairs, in every area of endeavor and on every level of society.
His emphasis upon the corollary importance of the humanities, of professional society affiliations, and of public service, in enabling young engineers to understand this philosophy has had much to do with the development of his own college's organization and curriculum and has had its impact on other colleges as well.
Edward Weston assembled a small library of mostly technical books during his life. The Robert W. Van Houten Library is fortunate to house this collection of books in the Weston Rare Book Room. We intend to make some of the titles from Edward Weston's personal library available on the web. Please check back periodically to see what we have added.

| Herman "Doc" Estrin of Scotch Plains, New Jersey, was born on June 2, 1915. He lived his entire life in the Plainfield/Scotch Plains sections of New Jersey. Doc Estrin was an emeritus professor of English at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and an educator for over sixty years. He was eighty-three years old when he died on May 7, 1999. Herman Estrin jointed NJIT (when it was call the Newark College of Engineering) as an instructor in English in 1946. For more than a half-century, Doc touched the lives of NCE and NJIT students. Until his retirement in 1981, he was the advisor for almost every student publication at the university, including the school newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, and technical magazines. As a scholar, Dr. Estrin authored over 400 articles and 14 books. He lectured and made presentations internationally. He served as president of the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English. He established the Estrin Scholarship Program for students in extracurricular activities at NJIT. He founded the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. Among his many awards Herman Estrin was the first recipient of NJIT's Van Houten Excellence in Teaching Award; he was given the Distinguished Teaching Award by the the New Jersey Council of Teachers; he was decorated with a Silver Medal from the Mayor of Paris for teaching chemical engineering graduate students at the University of Paris; and he was honored by the New Jersey Scholastic Press Assocation and The Wall Street Journal as an outstanding faculty advisor. This sketch of Doc Estrin's life scarcely suggests the accomplishments of this man who devoted his life to the worship of knowledge and who inspired thousands of students and innumerable colleagues to share his passion. After his death, his family donated his papers to the Van Houten Library, thus establishing this Estrin Collection. Digital highlights of the collection | Preliminary finding aid |

"NJIT believes that its role as an educational institution is best served by disclosing to the public all academic research, dissertations and theses developed by students during the course of their studies or employment at the university." NJIT :Academic Policies and Procedures (5/15/2000)
The world of scholarship depends on people making student research available to others. When that is done electronically over the web, more people can get access at lower cost, and more knowledge transfer occurs. This can stimulate education and research. It also can ensure that many people give credit to the student for his/her work, and that the student's research is cited in others' publications. NJIT also benefits through greater University's prestige and attracting new students and faculty in our areas of research.
Currently dissertations are available electronically publicly through UMI. These are available electronically to NJIT users for free but through a fee to others. Currently Theses are available publicly as bound hard copy through the NJIT library and interlibrary loan to other institutions. However, many ETD are not read because of the UMI fee or because of limited hard copy only access. The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) estimates that electronic access multiplies the number of times works are read by a factor of ten or more and that it would greatly aid graduate education if as many as possible of these were made freely available. Since NJIT aims to maximize access, which is especially appropriate for a public university, it will not charge and therefore will also be no royalties.
This is a group of over 100 universities working together to build a National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, i.e. collaborating on making their theses and dissertations available freely over the web. This initiative involves training graduate students both to publish electronically and use digital libraries, to better prepare them for their research and future careers. The electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) they produce will be widely accessible, supported by powerful search and browsing software. The ETD participants are research universities with graduate programs (e.g. Brigham Young University, California Institute of Technology, Clemson University, MIT, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, et. al.) whose libraries now keep copies of dissertations, theses, and special reports from undergraduate and graduate students. Copyright generally is retained by the authors, their institution, or both.
This enables NJIT to piggyback on the work and standards of a powerful group of research libraries to provide better access to NJIT theses and dissertations and also to bring greater research prestige to NJIT. (See their web-site: www.ndltd.org )
The NJIT: Academic Policies and Procedures states that projects, theses and dissertations created by students shall be governed by the following provisions as outlined in NJIT's copyright policy under "Ownership and Disposition of Copyrightable Materials":
"D. Copyright ownership of projects, theses and dissertations generated by research which is performed in whole or in part by the student with financial support in the form of wages, salaries, stipend or grant from funds administered by the Institute shall be determined in accordance with the terms of the support agreement, or in the absence of such terms, shall become the property of the Institute.
E. Copyright ownership of projects, theses and dissertations generated by research performed in whole or in part utilizing equipment or facilities provided to the Institute under conditions that impose copyright restriction shall be determined in accordance with such restrictions.
F. Copyright in projects, theses and dissertations not within the provisions of Categories D and E of this policy shall be the property of the author. However, the student must, as a condition of a degree award, grant royalty-free permission to the Institute to reproduce and publicly distribute copies of the project, thesis or dissertation. "
Therefore as a result of this, NJIT maintains the non-exclusive right to freely distribute all NJIT theses and dissertations publicly, including electronically over the web.
Currently the student submits 4 paper copies that are sent to a binder (One of these bound copies is made available in the NJIT library). In the future, only one 100% cotton signed original will be stored at NJIT in a preservation box, unbound, and will not be available for public use. In the event that the digital theses/dissertation is ever destroyed or inaccessible, the library staff will rescan from the 100% cotton preservation copy. The Library is committed to preserving the works received, making sure that these will be accessible in the future, regardless of changes in media and standards.
Anyone, who chooses, will be able to freely download, print and bind a theses or dissertation. The fee/money that been dedicated for binding will instead be used for scanning and online access. If a student or academic department wishes to continue to have a bound copy, they can print a copy and send it to the binder at their own cost. Library staff will scan each ETD in order to insure a high quality electronic copy.
The library currently catalogs all NJIT dissertations and theses and the catalog is freely available on the web. In addition UMI, indexes all dissertations. NJIT intends to be able to link the web catalog directly to the ETD so that a searcher can call up the image of the original on their local computer. In order to improve access, NJIT will soon index all abstracts, table of contents and bibliographies. NJIT currently studying how to supply it's citation information to Internet search engines for greater access.
When a student has his/her research published in a conference, book, or journal, he/she usually sign some type of agreement with the publisher. During these negotiations a student may want to discuss matters of timing and revision. A student has the right to negotiate with a publisher to reduce access to the NJIT ETD, as noted below, for a limited amount of time, if they request this as a condition on publishing. However, most publishers consider a thesis or dissertation to be quite different from a journal article or book. Typically an article is much shorter than the chapter or full work, has been revised as a result of the editorial process and peer review, and sometimes has several authors, resulting in many publishers having no concern regarding full access to ETDs.
A student, upon completing his/her theses/dissertation automatically gives NJIT non-exclusive free distribution rights in perpetuity. A student will continue to own his/her own theses/dissertation and may also publish, sell or otherwise distribute it as he/she sees fit. However, two proposed temporary options may be available to students to limit public distribution by NJIT for a period of no longer than two years:
- A student, who wishes to commercially publish the theses/dissertation, may apply for NJIT Only Access for a period of one year to limit free web access to only NJIT faculty, students and staff via IP address. This option is specifically for a student who is publishing the theses/ dissertation. The student must formally request and obtain approval for NJIT Only Access and justify the reasons. The theses/dissertation will be listed in the library catalog but will not be distributed outside of the NJIT community. The student may apply to renew NJIT Only Access for one additional but final year, for a maximum total of two years from the date of the ETD approval, providing that the publishing reasons are justified.
- A student, who wishes to apply for a patent directly related to a theses/dissertation, may request Restricted Access (i.e. limited to the Dean, the Department head, the Advisers, and the Academic Committee) for a period of one year. This option is set up for a student who has a specific patent pending. The student may apply to renew NJIT Restricted Access for one additional year, for a maximum total of two years from the date of the ETD approval, providing that the patent pending reasons are justified.
NJIT realizes that some students, especially in the humanities, prepare books related to their theses or dissertations. In general it appears to be the case that electronic release of early versions of a book leads to greater sales of such books. Indeed, having an electronic work made available on the Internet, and telling a publisher that there have been a large number of electronic accesses to that work, may help the student land a book contract. Usually, books that relate to theses or dissertations turn out to be significantly changed as part of the editorial process. This makes it likely that those interested in the student's work will buy their book when it comes out, even if they have reviewed their ETD. However, since publishers vary widely in their policies, it may be wise to share this information and other documents about the ETD initiative with publishers to which the student is likely to submit their work.
UMI (now a division of Bell+Howell) is a corporation in Ann Arbor, Michigan that maintains a microform archive of about 1.5 million dissertations, as well as an online service called Dissertation Abstracts. Most dissertations written in the US are submitted to UMI for archiving on microfilm, from which microform or paper copies can be produced. UMI functions as an on-demand book publisher that eliminates the editorial process. One of the services they offer is to help students regarding copyright and working with publishers. They accept electronic submissions as well as paper submissions. The latter are scanned in and OCR'ed (optical character recognition). UMI makes available online electronic versions of all works they receive after 1996. Few masters theses are sent to UMI. The ETD initiative aims to handle the hundreds of thousands of theses that UMI does not receive each year. UMI has a representative on the Steering Committee and on the Technical Advisory Committee for the NDLTD. More information about UMI can be found at their web-site www.umi.com.

The mission of the NJIT Attic is to: collect, document, and display -- in both digital and traditional formats -- items, objects, information, and records that tell the corporate and social living history of NJIT and its predecessors. As such, the NJIT Attic will comprise the "collective memory" of NJIT.
The archives is neither the university's records management service nor its legal repository, and it should not be construed to contain the complete, exhaustive, definitive, legal records for NJIT.
Plan of action:
Each year the library will collect, preserve, organize, catalog, index, digitize, and make accessible physically and over the web the key documents of three years of NJIT history. These shall include but not be limited to photos, yearbooks, publications, newspapers, biographical information, brochures, important letters, and other key documents.
Consult the listing in the right column to see our work in progress and to read about some of our plans, projects, and collections.
