Materials such as articles, books, patents, reports, theses can be requested through the Interlibrary Loan & Article Delivery Services Office at the Van Houten Library. The Interlibrary Loan staff will arrange for the delivery of books by mail and photocopies of articles, either by email, mail or fax. Materials not owned by the NJIT library will be obtained from another library. The library cannot provide course related textbooks, workbooks, or software as required by course instructor.
How to Request Materials (Articles, Books, Etc...)
-
Use the Online Library Interlibrary Loan Forms to submit your requests. Note: Materials owned and available at the NJIT library will be processed and shipped within two business days upon receipt of request. The standard loan period for NJIT materials is twenty eight days. Because of the extra time involved in delivering materials, there will be a ten days grace period (i.e. 38 days) for NJIT distant learning students.
How Many Items Can Be Borrowed?
A maximum of 10 items per week will be processed for a Distance Learning student. This includes journal articles, books, and interlibrary loan documents ordered through the library.
How to Request a Renewal of Borrowed Books?
A Renewal Request Form located on the back cover of the book should be completed and this information about renewal can be sent before the due date in the following ways:
-
E-mail your request at lib_ill@njit.edu (preferred)
-
Phone the Interlibrary Loan Office at (973) 596-3204
The NJIT Library will either email or fax your confirmation of the renewal provided that the item(s) was(were) not requested by someone else. Books obtained from other libraries may not be renewable, depending upon the lending library's policy.
What is the Fine & Fee for Late or Non-Return of Borrowed Books on Time?
Late or non-return of NJIT owned materials will be fined at the standard library rate (view Circulation Policy , under fines and lost or damaged materials category.)
Late return of materials on loan from other institutions may result in a hold placed on your diploma/transcript, larger late fees, and possible fines and fees of a lending institution when applicable.

More about our mission and vision
Edward Weston assembled a small library of mostly technical books during his life. The Robert W. Van Houten Library is fortunate to house this collection of books in the Weston Rare Book Room. We intend to make some of the titles from Edward Weston's personal library available on the web. Please check back periodically to see what we have added.

COURSE RESERVES
Professors and instructors may place items on course reserve. These materials will be placed behind the Circulation Desk and may be accessed by students to use for a limited amount of time.
Items designated as course reserves may belong to the professor or the library’s collection. The professor must decide the loan period for an item: 2 hours or overnight.
The library will not accept or acknowledge material requested for e-reserves.
TO PLACE MATERIAL ON COURSE RESERVE
- Fill out the “NJIT Library Reserve Material Form”
then
- Submit the completed form to the Circulation Department in person at the Circulation Desk. Items in the library’s collection will be retrieved by staff. The Professor’s copy must be brought to the library along with the completed form.
OR
- Complete the online course reserve request Google Form. If the reserve item belongs to the professor be sure to bring it to the library after submitting the request.
To ensure materials are available on the first day of the semester, please have your items submitted for reserve at least 7 days before the start of classes.
When the reserve process is completed by the library staff, the professor or instructor will receive an email informing them the requested material has been placed on reserve and available for student access. If items in the library’s collection are not immediately available, the library staff will attempt to secure those items by the “recall” process, or will consult with the Librarian liaison for the department for further options.
Materials that are not owned by either the university or professors may be acquired by the library if it is determined by subject librarian liaisons that such a purchase would also fulfill a need within the library’s collection. Books that the library does not purchase but are still required for a course should be bought either by the professor or the department.
