Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) Policy

In January 2001, the NJIT library initiated its ETD program, wherein the library would no longer provide in-print or photocopied theses and dissertations (TD's) to users, but would, instead, scan in the TD's produced by its students and make these ETD's available on the web.

Due to state of NJ and NJIT budget cuts, the library is no longer able to continue its ETD project as initially conceived.

Effective August 1, 2002, the library will:

continue to scan newly produced TD's (approximately 70 dissertations and 40 theses a year), place those ETD's on the web, and deposit the unbound paper original in storage
provide original, bound, paper copies of past-year's TD's on request to on-site users; such items will only be available to read within the library; requests must be made in advance; items will be available next day; same-day requests cannot be honored
refuse all outside requests to provide copies of dissertations done before 1997; suggest outside users purchase copies from UMI's Dissertation Express database
instruct users to get free PDF files of NJIT dissertations done between 1997 and 2000 directly from UMI's Current Research @ NJIT database (available on our databases menu)
charge a fee of $30 to any outside requests for thesis to be scanned or photocopied
scan TD's upon request for remote, NJIT users (e.g., e-Learning students, faculty on sabbatical, etc.) who cannot get to campus

On-site user, NJIT or otherwise	we will retrieve paper copy for user upon advance request; user can pick up at Circulation Desk; to be used only in the library in exchange for an ID	we will continue to create ETD's for the web within six months or so after graduation	we will retrieve paper copy for user upon advance request; user can pick up at Circulation Desk; to be used only in the library in exchange for an ID	we will instruct the user to get a free PDF copy directly from UMI's Current Research @ NJIT database	we will continue to create ETD's for the web within six months or so after graduation
Off-site, non-NJIT user (including ILL requests)	user will pay NJIT $30 to create an ETD for the web	we will continue to create ETD's for the web within six months or so after graduation	user should buy copy from UMI's Dissertation Express database	we will provide the user a PDF file we get for free directly from UMI's Current Research @ NJIT database	we will continue to create ETD's for the web within six months or so after graduation
Off-site, NJIT user (e.g., e-Learning student, NJIT faculty on sabbatical, etc.)	we will create an ETD for the web upon request; turnaround time will depend on workload; currently 1 week	we will continue to create ETD's for the web within six months or so after graduation	we will create an ETD for the web upon request; turnaround time will depend on workload; currently 1 week	we will instruct the user to get a free PDF copy directly from UMI's Current Research @ NJIT database	we will continue to create ETD's for the web within six months or so after graduation
